Calculation Methodology & Data Sources

At Benefit Calc AU, accuracy and transparency are paramount. Every calculation rule, threshold, and taper rate is version-controlled and derived directly from official Australian Commonwealth legislation.

1. Primary Authority Sources

All formulas and rates implemented in our calculation engines are audited against official publications:

AuthorityPublication / Guide SectionGoverning Legislation
Services AustraliaPayment rates for FTB Part A & Part BA New Tax System (Family Assistance) Act 1999
Department of Social Services (DSS)Family Assistance Guide 3.1.4 (Part A Rate Calculation)Family Assistance (Administration) Act 1999
Department of Social Services (DSS)Family Assistance Guide 3.1.5 (Part B Rate Calculation)Social Security (Administration) Act 1999
Department of Social Services (DSS)Family Assistance Guide 3.1.7 (Care Percentage Brackets)Child Support (Assessment) Act 1989

2. Statutory Indexation Schedules

Family Tax Benefit payment rates and income free areas are indexed annually on 1 July in accordance with changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Our engineering team updates rate configuration files immediately upon the Gazettal and publication of new indexation figures by the Commonwealth.

3. Mathematical Formulas & Rounding Rules

  • Period Conversions: Fortnightly payment rates are converted to annual figures by multiplying by 26 fortnights (or statutory 26.0714 factors where specified in DSS schedule comparisons). Monthly equivalents are calculated as Annual ÷ 12.
  • Taper Reductions: Calculated as Taper Rate × (Adjusted Taxable Income - Income Free Area) and rounded to the nearest cent.
  • Shared Care: Applied using the official Family Tax Benefit statutory scale (<35% = 0% FTB rate, 35%–47% = 25% + 2%/pt, 48%–52% = 50%, 53%–65% = 51% + 2%/pt [e.g. 65% care = 75% FTB], more than 65% [66%–100%] = 100%).

4. Modular Architecture & Verification

Our codebase cleanly isolates statutory rate data (e.g. ftb-rates-2026-27.ts) from user interface components. Pure mathematical functions are continuously verified against a comprehensive suite of automated unit tests covering standard family scenarios, blended families, shared care arrangements, and high-income thresholds.
